Winter 30 for 30 items

Here are the 30 items I'll be wearing over the next 30 days as part of Kendi Everyday's 30 for 30 remix challenge. I'm doing it again because I learned a ton about how to remix my wardrobe during the Fall challenge. Plus, I met so many cool bloggers who continue to give me great styling ideas.

It was harder to pick my pieces this time because I didn't want too many repeats from the Fall 30 for 30, which consisted of the bulk of my fall/winter basics. I've included some fun color and prints to keep things interesting. I think I'll need to be more creative but I'm excited for the challenge. The 30 for 30 starts on Tuesday, February 1st so I have one more day for "free dress."

musthave monday: tassels and fringe

Tassels and Fringe

Tassels and Fringe by missioncloset featuring poncho tops

Not just for mortarboards, Art Deco meets prep meets hippie this spring thanks to some new takes on the classic tassel. I especially like the jewelry angle--long tassel earrings are so elegant and a fringe necklace is a cool way to dress up a simple tee. If you're the crafty type, P.S.-I made this has two DIY projects- a fringe necklace and tassel earrings.

spring trends: wide leg jeans

wide leg jeans

The wide leg silhouette is so flattering on any body type. Don't worry, you can keep your skinnies, but definitely consider mixing it up with a pair of super long wide legs jeans. I'm a big fan of the Ginger Stretch Trouser by 7 for All Mankind. The new Gap Wide Leg Trouser jeans also look promising, but consider sizing down because my Gap jeans always stretch out. I think wide legs look best when they're tailored to almost hit the floor. Pair them with your favorite wedges and you've nailed the 70s chic look for Spring.

I'm sad to part with this leopard sweater during the 30 for 30. It was a beloved item during the last challenge and I've worn it a ton this season so I think I need to change things up this time around. But don't be surprised if it sneaks back in at the last minute on Sunday.

My boyfriend told me my hair looks like Farrah Fawcett's today. I'm ok with that.

RSS feed problems

If you follow my blog with an RSS feed like Google Reader or Bloglovin, you may have noticed new posts are not feeding correctly. Something happened in the transfer from Tumblr to Blogger. Pretty please resubscribe to www.missioncloset.com or click on this handy icon to follow in Bloglovin. Thank you!

I decided to sign up for the Winter 30 for 30 so I'm trying to wear clothes that won't make it into the challenge. This colorful H&M tunic is an old standby when I feel the need to brighten things up a bit. The pattern reminds me of honeycombs. It's been beautiful and sunny in San Francisco for the past week and this top is a fun way to dress for the warmer temperature while still feeling appropriately dressed for winter.

three ways: breton stripes

Today I'd like to introduce you to Everybody, Everywhere, a new website by Linda and Liz. The idea is that different bloggers style a similar clothing item, post the look to their blogs, and post on Everybody Everywhere. Last month was gingham and today is Breton stripes. So check out the website if you're into stripes and want some more ideas for how to style them. Above I'm wearing a shirt I bought at Kookai in Paris last June. I like the twist on the traditional stripes with the lines printed to look like threads and the drawn on buttons.

And because I love striped tees so much, here are a couple more looks. The one on the left was from the Fall 30 for 30. Both tops are navy, sorry it's hard to see in the light. I'm committing to using my tripod more often so hopefully things are going to start looking a little better here on mission:closet. I'm also going to try to pose with my hand on my hip less frequently!

musthave monday: breton stripes

Breton Stripes

Breton Stripes by missioncloset featuring striped tees

I only recently learned the proper name for French nautical tees--Breton stripes. I knew they originally came from the South of France and it turns out Brittany was apparently the exact location. I blogged about them after my return from France last June, yet I had no idea they'd become so huge here just a season later. Now the stripes are everywhere, and I'm loving it. I'll be wearing my stripes tomorrow in honor of a new blogger project by Linda of The Auspicious Life and Liz of 26 and Counting. I won't give away all the details just yet, but I promise you'll learn many ways to wear Breton stripes.

new blog platform

I decided to switch my blog from Tumblr to Blogger. Tumblr is a great tool, but I decided it's best for posting cool photos rather than original content. I'll still have my Tumblr (missioncloset.tumblr.com) but missioncloset.com will now take you to Blogger. Tumblr will become my inspiration board. I haven't figured out how to transfer the old comments, but perhaps I'll get around to it eventually. Blogger allows me to customize the design of my blog more easily and post larger photos. Keep checking back for fun design changes.

spring ahead

Spring 11 trends
Spring 11 trends by missioncloset featuring drape neck tops

I know it’s still a few months out, but I’m getting pretty excited for Spring trends. The return of color makes me want to sort my closet like the rainbow and I love the long 70s looks that graced the runways. These are just a few trends I’m into for the season. I’ll certainly be going into more detail as we get closer to the warm weather. What spring trends are you looking forward to?

byer too!

Has anyone else happened upon the brand Byer Too! while thrifting? I see the tag a lot, especially on dresses. I found this Byer Too! dress at Painted Bird. I’ve often wondered about the brand. Most of the dresses seem to be 70s-80s styles. I imagined it to be the Charter Club or BP of an obsolete department store like Emporium Capwell (does anyone else remember the mini amusement park on the roof of the San Francisco Centre?). I conducted a brief Google search on Byer Too! and found their website, byer.com. Their first article of clothing to hit the market was a white blouse in 1964. And it turns out Byer actually still makes womens and girls clothing clothing for Macy’s, which bought Emporium in 1995. So my guess wasn’t far off! Judging from their currently featured styles, I’ll be sticking with the vintage goods.

open your golden gate

One of the lights in my normal “shooting location” is broken so I decided to stand near our Golden Gate Bridge print by Ben Barry. It’s especially fitting because I’m wearing clothes by local designers. The dress is by She Bible. It’s a style in their “Classic Dress” line in a dark plum color. The fabric is super soft organic cotton and it’s really comfortable. Check out their store, Curator, on Church St. in Noe Valley.

This necklace is by Mabel Chong. It’s actually one long chain but I like to double it up so the colors can play together. Mabel used to have a store in Noe but she recently relocated to Union Street.

January 17, 2011

Guys, I totally forgot about Musthave Monday yesterday. The Golden Globes distracted me. I promise it will resume next week! Today’s post isn’t about my outfit, but I’ll show it to you anyway. Today’s post is about the manicure I got over the weekend with Caroline before she went back to school. I go to Amazing Nails on Guerrero at 22nd. It’s a great little place if you’re looking for a new nail salon in the neighborhood. Once they let me borrow a bottle of their polish because I was going away for a wedding and they didn’t want my nails to chip before the big day. Somehow I got really into taupe/gray nails. I’m wearing Chinchilly by Etsy and I like how it’s a neutral with a different twist.

golden globes: my top 3

I was thrilled to see all the color and texture at last night’s Golden Globes. The departure from boring black and poofy silhouettes was so refreshing. Here are my top 3 favorite dresses of the evening.

Anne Hathaway looked dazzling in Armani Prive. The pinky, rose gold color was dark enough so it didn’t wash her out and the plunging back was so sexy. I also loved her hair in the soft waves.

The cut and color of this Calvin Klein Collection dress was incredibly flattering on Claire Danes.

Again the color really made the dress here for Angelina. The emerald sparkles on this Versace gave the perfect nod to vintage elegance.

menswear: ben minkoff

Many of you already know of my love for Rebecca Minkoff handbags, but today I’m excited to see her new line for men, Ben Minkoff. The Nicky Messenger above is an example of one of the more rugged pieces in the collection but Minkoff also uses buttery leathers and cool plaids. Check out the website for more bags, wallets, and totes.

Crystal's design is on the left and Mary's is on the right

Fashion Feud

Like I mentioned yesterday, Adelle and I went to the SF Fashion Feud on Tuesday night, where two designers were given fabric, a model, and an hour to create a piece of fashionable artwork. The competition between Crystal Hermann and Mary Yanez was pretty fierce, but only one could move on to the next round. I was so impressed by what they made in an hour and it was hard for me to pick my favorite. Crystal’s loose cowl-back design was very original but Mary’s plunging neckline was sexy and flattering. The winner was chosen by two judges and online votes from the crowd and Crystal won. Which one do you like? If you’re interested in checking out Fashion Feud, the next round takes place at 7pm on 2/8 at the Rickshaw Stop and Adelle is judging!

motherly love

I wore this last night to part 1 of the San Francisco Fashion Feud, a live Project Runway-like competition at the Rickshaw Stop. Adelle of The Fashionista Lab told me about it and we went together. It was a really cool event and I’ll be posting photos tomorrow. Today I want to give a shout-out to my lovely mother who bought me this Kate Spade bag for Christmas. We went to a sale event at the store in Westfield Mall in November and I mentioned offhand that I liked it, then I found it under the tree on Christmas morning. Thanks Mom!

cable carr

I spotted this Gap sweater while researching clothes for the Ateqah’s winter wardrobe series. I’ve found it to be a good way to wear the chunky knit trend in a non-bulky way. It’s been really chilly in San Francisco lately and I have to wear a sweater or jacket around the office most days. This cable knit number kept me nice and cozy.

musthave monday: rose gold

Rose Gold
Rose Gold by missioncloset featuring stamped jewelry

I’m going to start featuring a “musthave” every Monday—a trend I’m loving that would be a good addition to any gal’s wardrobe. Today’s musthave was inspired by last week’s DIY necklace project. Rose gold is popping up everywhere, not just on jewelry . While only certain skin tones could pull off the Halston Heritage pleated dress, there are so many ways to wear this trend. I personally love seeing it mixed with other metals, like on the zigzag House of Harlow ring. But it’s certainly fabulous on its own—the oversized Michael Kors watch would pop on any wrist.

smudges on the mirror

Please excuse the “spots” on my jacket. They’re actually just smudges on my mirror that I was too lazy to clean today. Here’s my Aritzia blazer again, this time dressed down. It was one of those rare days I felt compelled to wear mostly black. But my bracelet is slate blue. It was a Christmas present from Dana, the fabulous gift-giver, and I love it. She has a similar one that I admired and so she thoughtfully got me my very own for Christmas. Isn’t she the best? I gave her jam.

Can you guess what it’s made of? No? Ok, I’ll just tell you: it’s carp skin! Crazy right? Adhered to leather somehow and dyed blue.

The designer is Leighelena from Austin and I just love the logo she stamps on the inside of the bracelets. Check out her site for more cool colors and crazy skins.

diy rose gold necklace

Erica Domesek, of PS-I Made This, never ceases to inspire me. I saw this rose gold necklace project on her blog last week and it looked too cute and easy to ignore.

I bought the copper pipe fittings at my local hardware store. It wasn’t until I got home that I realized price tags had darkened the color of the metal. A little Goo Gone helped get rid of the stickers, and the discoloration wasn’t so bad in the end. At just 59 cents a piece, I’ll look out for some non-stickered copper fittings next time I’m near a hardware store.

I’ve been meaning to tell you guys about a great scent I found while in France last June. It’s called Philosykos by Diptyque, a Parisian company with a shop on Maiden Lane (or online if you’re not in San Francisco). They’re famous for their candles but I discovered that I really like their perfume line. I’d never smelled anything like Philosykos. It’s a slightly woody scent (but I promise it’s nothing like patchouli—ew) made from figs. Another scent I loved was Do Son, a more floral, gardenia-infused perfume. Next time you’re in Union Square stop by Diptyque to tickle your nose with these pretty smells.

how michael kors won me over

I’m not sure why, but I’ve never been that into Michael Kors. Some of his shoes and bags have caught my eye in the past, but nothing fabulous enough to make me pull out the credit card.  And then I saw a friend wearing this watch last summer. The tortoise shell band is unique yet timeless and the crystals on the face give it the perfect glam touch. I thought about it for months and was so happy when my boyfriend gave it to me for Christmas. I had to get a link taken out so I went to the store and fell for another Kors item: a simple black clutch with some gold detail. It will make an appearance on the blog sometime soon.

denim and lace

Today I’m lucky to have the day off so I’m breaking out my lace skirt from Target, which isn’t quite work appropriate. This was another remixer-inspired purchase. I bought it just before the 30 for 30, after seeing a few bloggers add it to their remix. Olive green is not very prevalent in my closet and I’d like to wear it more. Perhaps that will be one of my 2011 resolutions.

to 2011

Happy New Year! Hope you had a great holiday weekend. Here’s what I wore out on NYE, a rainy night in San Francisco. I just got the slouchy blazer at Aritzia’s winter sale and the dress is from a great boutique in New York called Mint on the Upper West Side.

Our tree is not quite as impressive as my parents, but I’m still sad to be taking it out to the curb tomorrow.
