musthave monday: colorful pants

Bright Bottoms

Bright Bottoms by missioncloset on Polyvore.com

One of my favorite ways to wear spring's bright colors is an eye-popping pair of pants. Try colorblocking them with a bold tee or pair with any neutral top and simple black flats. I especially love red cropped skinny jeans and am on the hunt for the perfect pair. Zara has a lot of fun pants for spring and I'm sure they'll sell out quickly.

gingham and goth

J.Crew shirt and belt, Forever 21 dress and necklace, Camper shoes

My weekend was very mellow and this is what I wore to run errands around the Mission. It's one of those outfits that was born out of the 30 for 30. I never would have thought to wear this gingham shirt over a maxi dress without the confines of a limited closet.

Aritzia blazer and tee, Target skirt, Chelsea Crew shoes, Ambiance necklace, Revlon lipstick in Grape
I went out to dinner with my parents on Saturday night and tried out a lipstick color I bought earlier in the season but hadn't had the guts to try--a deep reddish purple. Bright lips are on the horizon for spring so I figured it's now or never. The dark tone took some getting used to and I felt slightly goth at first, but I think I'll be trying it again before the season is over.

purple rain

The past couple have days have been super busy and I haven't had time to take photos before leaving for work. So evening shots bring the return of mirror photos. Yesterday I went to the Prince concert in Oakland. He was a-mazing. I don't even know where to start. I will tell you that his costumes included three different chunky necklaces that I wish I owned. I struggled a bit with my outfit because I needed to wear something that could take me from work to Purple Rain. I don't think anything like that really exists, so I settled for the red ruffle shirt. Today I went to an SF blogger meetup and it rained boring old water rain, which inspired me to pull out my trusty, cozy cable knit sweater.  I met some great bloggers at the meetup and I'll be adding them to my blog roll soon.

portlandia part 4: covet

Arianna and I stumbled upon a gem of a boutique in Portland right around the corner from the Ace Hotel. Covet carries well-known designers like Geren Ford, Velvet, Missoni, and Citizens of Humanity, as well as Portland locals like Local Loop scarves and Tula Gems jewelry.

Local jewelry company Coatt makes these delicate morse coded necklaces that say things like "friend", "amore", "mom" or a personalized phrase.

Not in Portland? Check out Covet's online store.

sub zero

H&M fur stole, Aritzia blazer and tee, Stella McCartney jeans, Global Exchange bracelets, Camper shoes
There's crazy talk of snow headed for San Francisco sometime this week.  My spinning instructor even said that we should applaud ourselves for making it to class in "sub-zero" temperatures (it was 50 degrees outside). Though I'm not sure I buy the snow speculations, I'll take any opportunity I can get to pull out my faux fur.

portlandia part 3: the hunt for red lipstick

The main purpose of our trip to Portland was to visit my dear friend Arianna and her fiance Matt. One afternoon Ari and I went on a hunt for red lipstick. We decided to go with MAC because I've always liked the texture of their lipsticks and the pricepoint. Ari and I have very different skin tones so it was cool to see the way the shades transformed on each of us.

Ari purchased a brick tone called Dubonnet. I love the way it's red while still looking natural.

Lipsticks with a little blue tend to look best with my coloring so I went for the bright MAC Red.

from dress to tunic

Vintage brooch, J.Crew coat, French Connection tunic, J.Brand jeans, Aldo shoes, Rebecca Minkoff clutch
I last wore this tunic as a dress on day 11. In order to make it a little more work appropriate, I decided to wear it over jeans. Navy is one of my favorite colors but lately I hate the way it keeps looking like black when I post photos. Both the dress and the coat are navy.

portlandia part 2: outfits

Vince sweater, H&M tee, Banana Republic necklace, J.Crew belt

J.Crew sweater and shirt, Rikka scarf, J Brand jeans, Aldo shoes
Ann Taylor top, H&M scarf
It was chilly in Portland and I realized how wimpy I really am--no outdoor photos for this girl in the winter. Luckily our hotel room was hipstered out with some faux graffiti and dictionary wallpaper.

On Sunday I met up with fellow 30 for 30 remixer Linda for coffee (Day 19).  Shes lives in Portland and it was great to chat about blogging over warm beverages at Stumptown. I have a couple more Portlandia posts coming up- how to shop for red lipstick and a cute boutique find. Stay tuned!

Happy birthday to coolest seltzer-drinking, cardigan-wearing, New Yorker I know. You're a very special guy and I'm so lucky.

We're heading to Portland tonight to visit some friends and celebrate. Enjoy the long weekend!

sweater shaving

Sweater-Vince, top-Isso Vintage, necklace-Ambiance, jeans-J Brand, shoes-Chelsea Crew
I always thought sweater shavers were such a great idea. Well actually sweaters that don't pill are a great idea, but we can't have everything. I bought this cashmere Vince cardigan at the TJ Maxx in Miami last year, thinking it was a great deal from a quality label. Until the pilling started. I didn't wear it for months because the fur balls were so bad. Then I found a sweater shaver at Walgreens. I went to town on the cardi and had to empty the fur ball receptacle 3 times. I was just finishing up when I realized I had shaved through the sweater in several places.  Luckily I'm decent with a needle and thread, but now I know to proceed with caution when handling my sweater shaver.

in good company

Sweater-Gap, belt-F21, skirt and boots-Target
I love it when other bloggers remix the same items as me so I can get more styling ideas. Both Jessica and Kendi have remixed this Gap cable knit sweater and it appears we've all come to the same conclusion--it needs a belt!

j is for...jeans?

Shirt-J.Crew, necklace-F21, vest-Vince, jeans-J Brand, shoes-Camper
After purchasing a pair of J Brand jeans a couple of years ago, they quickly became my favorite denim company. They're durable, stretchy without stretching out, and have styles for all body types. I bought this pair at Candystore Collective, where they tend to sell like hotcakes. What's your favorite denim company?

tights should be tight

Top-Ann Taylor, necklace-either F21 or H&M (can't remember), skirt-J.Crew, tights-We Love Colors, socks-Hue, boots-Matisse
I try not to be a Negative Nancy over here on mission:closet. This blog isn't about calling out the Worst Dressed at the Grammy's or ripping apart the looks I don't love on the runways. But I feel it is my duty to tell you about my experience with We Love Colors tights. I bought a few pairs before the remix, thinking it would be fun to add a splash of color here and there. They have dozens of great shades to choose from. Today is my first day wearing these green tights and they're just not working out. They technically "fit" yet they're not stretchy at all so they did this weird bunching thing around my knees and just wouldn't stay in place. These are the least expensive at $8 so perhaps if I upgrade to the Microfiber line I'll have more luck. Until then, Hue remains my favorite line of tights.

musthave monday: gelish

I got my first gel manicure over the weekend and I love it so far. No drying time, no chips, no streaks, and supposedly lasts for 2 weeks. It's generally more expensive than a regular manicure. I was lucky to get a deal at Dun Up Boutique's Valentine's Day party yesterday by Mia of Superfly Nails. The color options are fairly limited now but as this trend grows more popular I'm sure we'll be seeing a bigger selection.

Happy Valentine's Day!

"winter" weekend

Shirt-J.Crew, necklace-Banana, dress-Forever 21, shoes- Chelsea Crew, bag- vintage Gucci from Bianca Starr
My apologies to the colder parts of the country, but I gotta say I loved the gorgeous weather we had in San Francisco this weekend. On Saturday Nick and I had brunch at Beretta then enjoyed the sun in Dolores Park with friends. Sunday I ran a bunch of errands in a sweatshirt so no pics.

Dress-French Connection, boots-Target
Coat-J.Crew, bag- Rebecca Minkoff

On Friday night I wore this out to 330 Ritch for a show by a Daft Punk cover band. (Cover DJ?) Hope you had a great weekend.

buttoned up

Sweater-J.Crew, necklace-Banana, skirt-Aritzia, tights- H&M, shoes-Theory
I think this is the first time in my adult life that I've worn a cardigan buttoned all the way up like a top. Normally I wear cardis over shirts or tanks or blouses. I guess the remix pushed me to try something new. The effect is pretty preppy but I'm sort of into it. Maybe. What do you think? I can take your brutal honesty.

February 10, 2011

in the red

Top-Zara, jeans-J.Crew, shoes-Theory
I've been craving more red in my life. I used to wear it a ton but somehow it disappeared over the last couple of years. Perhaps I was subconsciously feeling the influence of minimalism? Not really sure, but I'm very excited about this ruffly red Zara top. You just might see it again on February 14th.

February 9, 2011

Shirt-J.Crew, skirt-Lil from Jeremy's, shoes-Theory
I used to live a few doors down from the Jeremy's Department Store in San Francisco. If you live in the Bay Area and have never been, go NOW. Their discounted designer selection is immense--the SF location has everything from Jimmy Choo's to Anthropologie dresses, and the Berkeley store typically has a lot of J.Crew. When I lived nearby I could pop in frequently to get first dibs on new arrivals, but now that I live further I only make it to the store every couple of months when I get my haircut by Nicole at Grasshopper Salon. During my last trip I scored a Dolce Vita skirt for $19 and this silk Anthropologie skirt for $30. I love the bright colors. It reminds me of pop art.

February 8, 2011

not so basic blazer

Blazer-Aritzia, jeans-J Brand, shoes-Camper
Here's a different take on the classic blazer. I love this slouchy Aritzia jacket so much that I have it in dove gray too. The big pockets are great when I'm running around the office with pens and notebooks and devices. I promise I'll wear it again in a more interesting way during the 30 for 30, it was one of those mornings. I did manage to throw on some of my favorite bangles.

The blue lucite is by Alexis Bittar and it was a bridesmaid gift. I found the gold ones at Weston Wear on Valencia.

Don't forget to check out Everybody Everywear today to see how other bloggers style the classic blazer.

musthave monday: the classic blazer

The Classic Blazer

The Classic Blazer by missioncloset featuring flat shoes

Today's Musthave Monday was inspired by the ladies at Everybody Everywear who declared tomorrow Classic Blazer Day. I made this Polyvore for their site to inspire the bloggers who are styling their blazers tomorrow. I love the relaxed look in the Sartorialist image at bottom left and Kate Moss always makes a blazer look chic. Well, she makes anything chic, doesn't she? See you tomorrow in my variation of the classic blazer.

It's a busy day so I only had time for a quick photo by my office.  I like the sidewalks around the Embarcadero Center because they remind me of the ones in Ipanema I saw during a trip to Rio de Janeiro a few years ago. They're different of course, but I love the repeated mosaic designs and both are so much prettier than your average cement.

sea ranch

Sweater-Gap, scarf-Rikka

The weekend in Sea Ranch was a blast. I'm sad to report that we didn't see any whales, however there was plenty of wildlife, beautiful scenery, delicious food, and living room dance parties to make it an all around awesome trip. Plus the weather was gorgeous (sunny and 70s) the entire weekend so I'd probably take that over a whale.

February 4, 2011

Tee-Ann Taylor, vest-Vince, jeans-J.Crew, necklace-F21, shoes-Aldo
I'm off to Sea Ranch this weekend with a group of friends--happy birthday Liam! I'm excited to get out of town because I haven't gone anywhere in a few months. It's whale-watching season so I hope to return with a sighting or two. Wish me luck!

February 3, 2011

the crew

Shirt, belt, skirt-J.Crew, shoes-Camper

It wasn't until I started typing the caption for this photo that I realized I was wearing almost all J.Crew. I'm not surprised though, I'm a J.Crew/Jenna Lyons lover through and through. I just got the February catalog in the mail and am loving the classic, simple styles this season, like this silk top:
Not sure how the color would look on me, or if it's too short (I have a very long torso), but luckily the no shopping rule during the 30 for 30 will give me the whole month to think it over.

February 2, 2011

wide angle

Sweater-Gap, top and necklace -Isso Vintage, jeans-Stella McCartney, shoes-Camper
After creating my Polyvore on wide leg jeans last week, I knew I had to include this pair in my 30 for 30. I bought these a couple of years ago on a shopping trip with friend and style consultant Micki Turner. They've remained one of my favorite pairs of jeans. You can read more about that fateful shopping trip here. Micki likes to say she "launched" me and my love of fashion. I agree.

February 1, 2011

winter maxi

Dress-Forever 21, Scarf-Spain, Belt-Taxi CDC, Shoes-Chelsea Crew
Simple feels like the right look for the first day of the 30 for 30. By the end of the remix I'll probably pull out some crazy combos to keep things looking somewhat fresh, but today it's ok to wear the basics. I had only worn maxi dresses in the summer until now, so I'm excited to remix this one for the winter. It's really comfortable and cozy and I have some ideas for how to turn it into a totally different look.
