beauty crush: mac lipstick

Vegas Volt, MAC Red, and So Chaud
I fell hard for these three little tubes recently. I love, love, love MAC lipsticks. The creamy texture is moisturizing but stays in place and the $14 price point is perfect for someone who wants to try before they buy without breaking the bank. I had some help picking these colors. Tania rocked So Chaud on her blog recently so I knew the orange-red would be a fun color for Spring, Arianna and I bought MAC Red together while I was in Portland last month, and my friend Jennifer wore Vegas Volt to the Kate Spade event. I loved the coral on her so much I texted her afterward to get the name. Turns out Jennifer also has MAC Red and So Chaud. It seems I've found my lipstick soul mate.

Spring, sprang, sprung

Aritzia blazer, Audrey top, J Brand jeans, Camper shoes

After weeks of seemingly nonstop rain, spring has finally arrived in San Francisco. I decided to wear one of my favorite spring pieces to celebrate. I bought this dove gray, slouchy blazer from Aritzia last year and wore it nonstop all spring and summer. I plan to do it all over again this season. What was your favorite purchase from last spring that you'll be wearing a ton again this year?

musthave monday: penny loafers

Check out the Polyvore for items and prices

If you're feeling tired of your basic ballet flats, give penny loafers a try this spring. They polish up the look of your skinny jeans, cropped pants, or shorts, but maintain a casual, comfortable feel. You can't go wrong with black or cognac, but I  also love the fun colors Michael Kors has out this season, like tangerine and lime green.

sneak peek

Earlier this week, Becca, Eli, and Jorge invited my friend Elena and me to join a photo shoot. Jorge is a professional photographer, so we played around in his studio for the evening. I'll be posting some of Jorge's photos later on, but I thought I'd share a few behind the scenes shots from my own little camera.

salon effects

I've never been big on nail art, but the Sally Hansen Salon Effects ads caught my eye while flipping through magazines. So when I saw the display at Walgreens, I figured I might as well give them a go. $10 is not cheap, considering that's the average price of a manicure, but most of the Salon Effects designs are looks you can't achieve with nail polish (like the super glittery gold I'm excited to wear for a fun party night). I've also heard that it's similar to a Minx manicure, which costs around $40.

Over the weekend I decided to try out the gold and black "Misbehaved" design and I have to say I'm pretty pleased. The set comes with adhesive foils that are easy to apply--just pick the right size for your finger, peel off the back, and use the provided cuticle stick to smooth air bubbles. Finally you file off the excess length and you're good to go. I love that there's no drying time, but you can still take it off with polish remover. I've been wearing mine for six days now with zero chips and countless compliments.

new mission boutique: hangr 16

There's another new boutique in the Mission! Hangr 16 recently opened on 16th and Guerrero--right across the street from Candystore Collective and Bell Jar. So now there's yet another reason to go boutique hopping along the 16th Street corridor. Hangr 16 carries a great selection of local designers for both men and women. On Monday, March 28th, they're hosting a wine tasting event from 5:30-7:30 where you can sip while you shop. Also check out the Hangr 16 Facebook page to get word about weekly happy hour parties with DJs and beer.

texture and tweed

Cabi jacket and shirt, Stella McCartney jeans, Camper shoes
My mom offered me this jacket a few weeks ago because she didn't like the way it fit her. At first I was hesitant--it felt a little mature for me--but I decided it would make a good work outfit. Plus I don't mind a little nod to Chanel's classic tweed jackets. This piece will probably go into hiding for the spring and summer, but I'm sure I'll pull it out again next fall when I'm feeling like a little texture and tweed.

musthave monday: cobalt

One of my favorite spring colors is cobalt. I found a pair of Zara pants in this vibrant hue and I'm planning to try out some fun color combos. I'm thinking turquoise, lilac, or lemon.  Chiara of The Blonde Salad is a very bold dresser and has been wearing it a bunch lately.

guest blogger: cheetah for spring

Alicia of Cheetah is the New Black in an Equipment Blouse. borrowed Ani Lee Skirt. Banana Republic Clutch. Vintage Bracelets.

During the fall I wholeheartedly jumped on the cheetah print bandwagon. I wore it all season long, and loved the way it added a touch of glam to any outfit. But now I'm wondering how to transition my cheetah print pieces into spring, so I asked an expert, Alicia of Cheetah is the New Black, for her thoughts on how to incorporate cheetah into warmer weather outfits. Here are her tips:

"True cheetah / leopard fanatics such as myself, sport these prints year round (it's a classic in my mind). For those who are leery, let me assure you those animal print pieces you purchased this past fall will all transition straight into spring. Two easy ways to wear cheetah or leopard print are 1) on your bag or 2) on your feet. Animal prints act as the perfect accent piece, adding an element that is both equal parts fun and edgy (my favorite combination) to your outfit. One of my favorite trends this spring is vibrant color. I am especially looking forward to wearing the color orange and plan to accent it with cheetah print sweaters, bags, belts and heels. Don't be afraid to play around with cheetah / leopard prints, as long as you keep them as the accent piece in your ensemble you can't go wrong and will be completely on trend this spring!"

mira mira

I'm ecstatic to report that there's a very cool new boutique in my neighborhood. Mira Mira just opened up a week ago on 22nd at Valencia, and it's already buzzing with fashionistas. I stopped by last weekend during a shopping tour of the Mission with fellow blogger, Becca, of Free Honey. Becca just moved to San Francisco and I offered to show her around my favorite hood. I'd already been to most places on the tour, so it was refreshing to find Mira Mira. The focus of the store is European designers that are big over on that continent but still new to us. Mira, the owner, pointed out some really cute TBA (To Be Adored) pieces and showed us what she wanted to order from the Fall catalog. Mira Mira will be hosting monthly "girls nights" featuring trunk shows, clothing swaps, feather extensions, movie nights, and champagne coolies. I put myself on the mailing list so I'll let you know when I hear about the next one.

Jewelmint earrings, F21 top, H&M jacket, Cheap Monday jeans, Therapy bag, Aldo shoes
A variation of this outfit was pretty much my uniform all last weekend. These earrings were my first purchase from Jewelmint, a new company by Kate Bosworth and stylist Cher Coulter. You create a style profile at signup and each month they send you a selection of pieces based on what they think you'll like. You can then rate each item to help further pinpoint your style. Everything is $29.99, but I just got an email with the coupon code SPRING60 which gives first-time buyers 60% off. Good until March 31st.

book giveaway: what to wear, where

The Who What Wear girls, Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power, are having a big month.  Their second book, What to Wear, Where, just came out, and today they're launching a shoe line called W3 with JustFabulous, a customized shopping website for shoes and handbags. The shoes are featured in the new book, which I've already read cover to cover. Each pair is just $39.99 and they're all extremely cute.

I loved What to Wear, Where so much that I'm giving away a copy to one lucky reader. This style guide is filled with tips for what to wear to specific occasions. Need the perfect outfit for a school reunion? Or how about some direction on what to wear to meet the boyfriend's parents? This book tells you everything you need to know about dressing appropriately yet fashionably for every occasion. To win, all you need to do is become a fan of the mission:closet Facebook page and leave a comment on this post. I'll select a winner at random on Friday.

musthave monday: midi skirts

The Midi

The Midi by missioncloset featuring a knit skirt

My love of the maxi for spring is no secret and I plan on wearing them all season long. But I'm also really liking skirts that are a tad shorter and hit right around the calf, often called a Midi. I appreciate the 60s, Madmen feel of this very feminine silhouette.  Flowy materials and pencil skirts both work well. Micki Turner gave a great tip for wearing longer skirts, "To avoid looking dowdy keep part of the outfit tight or the shoe very cool and fun."

bloggers and bubbly

The Kate Spade event was a huge success! About 25 bloggers and friends came, sipped bubbly, tried on (and bought) beautiful jewelry, shoes and clothes, and chatted about blogging.  Thank you to everyone who came. I wish I had taken more photos. I was too busy mingling. If you missed the event you can still go to Kate Spade until March 16th for 20% everything in the store.

Each month this year, Kate Spade is featuring a different color. This month is Yellow.

to the max

H&M cardigan and dress, Rebecca Minkoff bag, Camper shoes

I wore this outfit all day last Saturday--to brunch, shopping, lounging around the house, and out to a casual dinner. I like the way maxi dresses can work for many different occasions. It's warming up in San Francisco but it was still a little chilly over the weekend so I played around with socks and sandals. I've decided I strongly prefer the look on me when I'm wearing a long dress or pants opposed to shorter hemlines because the socks tend to cut my legs short. Not flattering. In other news the Kate Spade event is tonight. Hope to see you there!

I'm so excited for the Kate Spade event tomorrow night! The Spring collection is filled with great colors, shapes, prints, and textures. Here are a few of my favorite pieces.

all saints spitalfields

Nick has been looking for a pair of boots so we went to All Saints Spitalfields in Union Square over the weekend. I first wrote about this British company last year after visiting their store in Miami. I was excited to hear they opened up a store in SF a few months ago. I absolutely love their leather jackets. The designs are on trend yet simultaneously timeless, and the high quality leather is soft and buttery. They remind me of Vince's jackets at about half the price. They had a great selection of men's shoes and Nick found a really cool pair of boots. Like the Miami store, vintage sewing machines and spools are the theme of the San Francisco All Saints. Even if you're not into the rocker style, it's worth a trip just to see the cool decor.
