the party dress: to rent

Rent the Runway

I've purchased far too many pricey holiday party dresses over the past few years. I always convince myself that I'll get enough wear out of them, but that's rarely the case. So last year I experimented by renting a dress from Rent the Runway. I was so satisfied with the experience that I'm doing it again this year. I love that they send you two sizes (for the one rental fee) and there's no need to worry about spills or damage since they cover you with insurance for $5. When you're done with the dress, you just pop it into the nearest mailbox using the provided envelope.

Tips
If you decide to rent, I highly recommend starting your search by filtering your size, body type, and date so you're not disappointed if a dress you love isn't available. I also suggest reading the stylist's notes and reviews for the dresses you're considering because they give you a general idea for sizing and what to expect (ie. "Dress does not come with pictured belt"). If the dress doesn't fit you when you receive it, you can return it within 24 hours for a full refund. You can also choose a second dress option for $25, which is a great idea if you're experimenting with a new designer or style for your first dress. Finally, if you find a dress you like, order it soon. It's a busy time of year at RTR!

the party dress: to buy

10 party dresses under $175

Every year I start to panic about a holiday party dress around the end of November.  But not this year! I beat the panic by renting a dress on Rent the Runway. In case you're about to hit panic mode, I'll be posting some dress ideas over the next few days. Tomorrow I'll show you my favorite RTR dresses, but I figured I'd start by picking out some affordable options to buy, just in case you plan to wear your dress more than once. Scroll through the slideshow to see 10 cute dresses for under $175.

history + industry

My talented friend Irene Wood recently launched History + Industry, an awesome line of statement necklaces. I was really excited when she asked me to style Wooden because I love the chunky beads and gold accents. I've already planned a few holiday outfits around it. Check out irenewood.com for more colors, styles, and paintings by Irene.

I just got these Kate Spade leopard heels for a steal at Last Call by Neiman Marcus in Milpitas. My mom has been there many times and I finally had a chance to join her. I also found a ridiculously cozy Vince sweater coat, an Ali Ro dress, and some Joie Chelsea booties. I highly recommend a trip down there, or over to the site where everything is an additional 30% off today.

two years

It's hard for me to believe I wrote my first blog post two years ago today. This past year has been really great and I'm so thankful for all the people I've met in the SF fashion community, like my fellow bloggers who inspire me ever day.

I'm especially thankful for you, my readers. As Janet says, it's all for you.

steven alan opening

A couple of weeks ago I checked out the Steven Alan store opening in Hayes Valley. (Sorry, I'm a little behind on blogging!) I'd never been to an Alan store so I was excited to check out the goods. I really liked their selection of shoes and handbags and I'll definitely be returning when it's not so busy to get a better look at the clothes. Casual menswear is one of Steven Alan's strengths so add the new store to your holiday-shopping-for-him map.

carrots

Cire Trudon bust candles
Carrots boutique in Jackson Square turned four years old last week and they threw a great party to celebrate. Bloggers Caitlin, Erin, Taylor, Samantha and Kendall co-hosted the fun event so a bunch of bloggers were there. I'd been wanting to check out Carrots for years and I was happy to finally have an excuse. It's a beautiful store owned by sisters Melissa and Catie Grimm. I was especially intrigued by the home decor like the Cire Trudon Napoleon bust candles and the Fornasetti ceramics. I didn't have time to peruse the clothes amidst the festivities so I'll definitely be returning to Carrots soon.

behind the scenes: posh party

Clockwise from far left: LyAnn, Tracy, Carlina, and Joanna
Last week Tracy, Carlina, and LyAnn of Poshmark came over to my apartment for the Skirts & Scarves Posh Party. They brought over some yummy wine and snacks and helped me take cover shots of the items I was listing in the app. Publicist Joanna Riedl also joined us as the PM Editor to facilitate the listings and answer questions from users during the party. These gals are so much fun I feel really lucky to have met a group of women who are as excited about fashion and technology as I am. Let me know if you're interested in hosting your own Posh Party (from anywhere in the country!) and I'll put you in touch with the Poshmark crew.

The geometric skirt and leopard scarf I listed in the app.

The covershot of the maxi skirt I listed. Wish I had ironed it!

samasource give work gala

Tibi dress, vintage clutch, Alex&Ani bracelets
Samasource is an awesome nonprofit that invented microwork, the new way to fight poverty by enabling capable, marginalized people to complete digital tasks in some of the world's poorest places. Last Friday Nick and I went to their annual Give Work Gala at Mezzanine. I borrowed a long Tibi dress from my sister Maggie and talked my hair dresser into giving me a simple updo after my well-timed haircut appointment. The highlight of the gala was a performance by Les Nubians, an Afropean duo I've loved since college. Thanks to Samasource and our friends Jill and Leila for throwing a great party for a great cause.

komen card/theory recap

Last week's Shop for the Cure kickoff party at Theory was awesome thanks to all the friends, bloggers, and family (Mom!) who came to support this great cause. We loved the Theory team for supplying us with delicious champagne and style advice all evening long. And an extra special shoutout to Stephen Heraldo, photographer extraordinaire for shooting the event. Check out more of his work on his site and blog

If you couldn't make it to the party, you can still get the Komen Card at any of the participating stores through November 6th.

candid camera

Photo by Bob Horowitz, All City
I had no idea this photo was taken of me until my friend from high school sent the link to this post the following day. I'd never seen All City but I can already tell it will become one of my favorite photography blogs. It perfectly captures the city of San Francisco. Bob Horowitz's shots are especially great and he was kind enough to send me the hi-res version of Jesus Loves You. It will be the first photo I've printed and framed in years. Thanks Bob!
